Som Chair

Som is a laconic chair for restaurants, coffee shops, and other public spaces. It is 3D printed from melted recycled PS plastic with minimum waste. The unique production technology makes it possible to create furniture in any color. Moreover, no glue and screws are used to connect the two parts of the chair, making it fully recyclable and easy to disassemble and store.

This project was inspired by a unique design made by Memphis Milano. Combining sharp geometric shapes and vivid colors creates more than furniture but functional sculptures that retain their value even nowadays. Memphis objects are memorable at first sight because of their asymmetrical exotic style and offbeat combination of color and texture. My desire was to make a chair that respectfully refers to Memphis furniture but uses new technology, such as a 3D printer.

Som can be used both outdoors and indoors. The chair has the same length of the back and bottom parts, so it is possible to turn it upside down if needed. To remove the leg, lean Som forward and pull it out. The plastic surface does not require special cleaning products and can be washed with water and soap. Som chair can hold up to 150 kg and pigments in the plastic do not fade even under the direct sun.

The hardest part of Som's design process was idea generation. I needed to consider the possibilities of the KUKA 3d printer and recycled PS plastic. For me, it was essential to make a chair from a secondary material no less attractive than one made from a primary one. Also, combining Memphis style and modern trends in one idea turned out to be difficult, but the final result is truly fascinating.
